Okay, so I'm not brilliant. I'm deluded. But my kitchen folly did at least lead me to challenge some existing assumptions. Namely, that the table had to face the window to the back yard. See, while I stood in the kitchen this past weekend I said to myself, for the millionth time, "Gosh, I wish the neighbors could stand here for a few minutes and see that I really get the a$$-end view of their deck. Why can't they plant a few boxwoods or something?"
See, my lovely, lovely neighbors have a deck. And that deck is the view from the window over my sink. And, though they have a lovely yard, my edge of the deck is their "utility corner." It's where they stack the extra mulch, leave the grill and the charcoal bags...in short, it's the piece they can't see from their kitchen. So, why should I have to see it? I spend far more time at the sink than I do lounging at the table (weekend mornings notwithstanding). Maybe I should move my sink to the nice view spot?
So the wheels were turning. And they turned to include a powder room (the mudroom/powder room sunroom project is moving slowly and is still on the table, I promise a full report when there are known knowns...). The shaded area at the top is where I'd put that powder room. Finally, a way to put a bathroom in the kitchen without the door seeming to open to the table - hello!
What do you think? We are a while off from a kitchen reno, I had said seven years from move-in (to justify the spending on the counters at that point) and we are at year 3...but still, always good to have a plan!
I also tried it with the range and fridge switching places, since the range would then go in what is now a closet and I could do this cool little spice rack along the side...kid of cosy right?
Here's how that would look (and I even added the door to the loo, so that would be clearer...the floor plan above shows the door where it is now).
I'd have to get a kitchen designer to advise me on which was is best for the 'ol work triangle. But I see real potential in the long peninsula for storage or the microwave, etc. If the fridge was by the sink I'd have the wall shelving there be open storage for plates and glasses, like we have now. If the stove went there I'd likely have to change the pantry cabinet (the thin one parallel to the peninsula) to include that kind of open shelving. We are open shelving peeps - but never near the stove. That's just gross.
Okay, consider this idea recorded for future reference. And, I fully admit that in another week I may come back and decide that I am again, quite deluded. I'm ok with that.
If everything goes as planned, your kitchen will look absolutely perfect. The kitchen is the heart and soul of our entire house, so coming up with a precise and elegant design is a good investment. For those who are planning to do some renovations, purchase simple materials only. The simplicity and minimal design of your materials, will all mesh together for a stunning finish.
