The kitchen at Holiday House is a little rough. We are kind of in fake-it-till-you-make-it mode. So, we put in a new, smaller island and new appliances and counter tops. That made it functional. Okay, technically the old appliances were functional, but they were from 1984 and I just could not face scraping 25 years of someone else's grime off them upon moving in. And, appliances can, and should, outlast any renovation we do down the line.
But, what I'm finding is that the kitchen is actually really good space to use. It's cozy and works pretty well. The few exceptions to this are: no place for the microwave, and gosh it would be nice to have a larger fridge. So I start thinking about how it could be reconfigured. And that's where I get stuck. Until this week. I had a facepalm moment when I saw this:
Of course! See, the problem with any redesign I imagine in our kitchen is that the table needs to face the windows. And that, alone with the issues of doorways and chimney placement, really kills anything that changes the flow. But, to get more fridge space, the fridge must move, and the flow, well it must change. I'm really excited about seeing if something like this might work. I need to measure and whip out a floor plan to see if I'm off my rocker or if I'm brilliant, just brilliant!
Full disclosure? I also fully intend to steal this idea from the same AT post:
You've got great ideas for your kitchen remodeling. I also like that kitchen bench. It is unique and perfect for a bit of chatting during breakfast.
Good luck to your kitchen remodeling! I'm pretty sure you'll come up with a brilliant way of placing those appliances.
